Rally-test at Zeals Airfield (3)
We have never really got comfortable with
such tests in the rallies we’ve competed in, and partly for that reason never
tried to improve ourselves. The other part of that reason has to do with Zeals,
on one of the early Pallydwr rallies. We passed a Volvo (or Saab ?) up to the
axles in mud in the field beside the concrete. Ten minutes later we passed it
again as we came around for the second set of tests, (waiting for a tractor to
haul it out?). At the end of the rally, however, that car was still way up at
the top of the results, while we were in our usual position at the back of the
class. (The car in question was crewed by at least one Salisbury CSMA member).
We were able to experiment with different
methods of describing the course and get a consistent method of calling the
directions. The nearest we came to getting a wrong test was right in front of
Ted Howles (marshalling whilst the Coupe had some more Chilean wine removed
from it), and I had a tense few seconds trying to find reverse to get back to
the cone I’d missed. At the end of the event we had got a full complement of 12
right tests, no cones down, no overshoots on the stops, and the time penalties
we’d accumulated owed much to the Sabre’s poor gearchange. I need to stop
polishing that car and get down to some serious mechanical work.
There's no way I can dare to lift the bonnet and show the Sabre's power-plant.
